A small fiber arts studio and shop located in our Artisan Fiber Mill.  We specialize in small batch fiber processing for small farms and individual crafters, providing personal, customized services.  We enjoy taking the raw fiber and transforming it into products like roving, batts and yarn that will then be used to create beautiful heirloom items.   We also enjoy teaching workshops on felting, spinning, weaving and more.  If you ever have a question about fiber or fiber arts, we hope you will give us a call.

July 10 All About Wool (and other fibers) 10am - noon

Thinking about purchasing fiber? Wondering how to pick out a great fleece? Want to learn the differences in wools, alpaca, llama, mohair and more. Curious about what is involved in preparing your own fleece? Should you process it yourself or send it to a mill? What are your options?

Fiber quality and preparation makes a huge difference in your final product. Knowing your options will allow you to control the process and achieve the outcome you desire.

In this workshop you will learn all about fiber:
how to select a fleece
identifying faults & what to avoid
types and characteristics of different fibers
which fibers are suitable for different purposes
how to skirt/ sort
storage
options for processing
problems and pitfalls to avoid

Students may bring any fleece they would like to ask questions about.

July 11 Painting with Wool (Needle Felting) 10am - noon

About Painting with Wool
Fun, Creative and Relaxing!!! Easy enough for a beginner, but still enjoyable for an experienced felter. This workshop is designed to inspire & ignite your creative side and give you the confidence to enjoy the process of creating something beautiful.

Join us in this exciting workshop and learn the basics of Needle Felting or how to “paint” and “sculpt” with wool fibers. You will learn a variety of needle felting techniques, create your very own original piece, and go home with all the materials you need to continue felting! These techniques can then be used to create many different items including 3-D sculptures, wool paintings, jewelry, ornaments, embellishments and more. In addition to basic skills, we will explore the special qualities of wool and other fibers, and more advanced skills such as blending colors, layering, perspective, and more.

NEVER MADE ANYTHING BEFORE? That’s OK - needle felting is the perfect craft for you. It is quick and easy to learn the basics, not messy, doesn’t require expensive equipment or a lot of space, and it’s fun for all skill levels.

July 18 Drop Spindle Spinning 10am - noon

Fall in love with the relaxing art of spinning. Here is your chance to learn the centuries-old art of creating yarn on a wood drop spindle. The step-by-step process ensures understanding and success. We'll also cover some basics of fiber types and preparation. Each student will leave with a new skill, a drop spindle, and extra roving so you can keep spinning!

July 25 Dyeing Yarn 9am - noon

Have you always wanted to learn how to dye your own yarns, fibers or fabrics? In this class, you will learn the basics of acid dyeing on protein fibers, to get gorgeous colors that are unique to you!
We will be learning about the yarn dyeing process and different techniques to achieve different dyeing effects. Each participant will leave the workshop with practical skills for home dyeing projects and three hand-dyed “mini-skeins” of yarn to use in their own creations.

July 31 Punch Needle Embroidery 10am - noon

Come learn the art of punch needle embroidery. This traditional embroidery technique has been around for centuries and has recently come back in a big and modern way in the crafting community. Due to the wonderful detail you can create, punch needle embroidery is often called painting with thread. It is a form of embroidery worked with a special punch needle that creates different sized loops on the front of the fabric. This craft is easy to learn, gives quick results and makes stunning textile art. In this workshop you will learn the basics of punch needle embroidery and receive step by step guidance on your project.

Aug 1 Needle Felt in a teacup 9am - noon

In this fun workshop you will learn the basics of needle felting while creating a charming fairy garden, village, or scene inside a teacup. These can be used decoratively or as a pincushion.
Needle felting is a fun, creative and inexpensive fiber craft in which wool fleece or roving is sculpted using special barbed needles. You will learn a variety of needle felting techniques, create your very own original piece, and go home with all the materials you need to continue felting!
This project has many elements and is fast paced but still beginner friendly.

August 2 Fiber Processing 9am - 1pm

Learn how to skirt, clean, and wash a fleece. Then learn how to prep the fibers for spinning yarn. Students will learn the difference between picking,combing, carding and blending. We will also explore carding and blending on hand carders, a blending board and a drum carder. We will compare the hand tools to the commercial equipment in a tour of the mill.

Farm to Yarn Tour

Farm to Yarn Tour - A Two Dachshund Farm and Shepherd's Gate Fiber Mill collaboration

If you are participating in the 2025 NC Yarn Tour, you are invited to a Farm to Yarn Event presented jointly by Two Dachshund Farm in Franklinton, NC and Shepherd’s Gate Fiber Mill in Youngsville.  Your day will be divided into two sessions: 10 to 11:30 and 1:00 to 2:30 in which you will tour a working fiber farm with alpacas, llamas, sheep, and Angora goats in one session (either morning or afternoon), and in the other session you will visit a working fiber mill to see the production  process that turns raw animal fleeces into beautiful yarn. Time will be included to shop at each location.     There is a picnic area with tables and umbrellas if you would like to bring a lunch and eat between sessions at Two Dachshund Farm.
